Locking Wheel Nut Removal & Tyre

Locking wheel nuts are special types of wheel nuts that are used to secure wheels onto a vehicle.

They are designed to prevent theft by requiring a unique key, known as the locking wheel nut key to remove them.

However, there may be times when you need to remove the locking wheel nut without the key, for example, when you have lost the key or the key is damaged.

In such situations, you can either use a locking wheel nut removal tool or seek the help of a locking wheel nut removal specialist.

Different Types of Locking Wheel Nuts

There are different types of locking wheel nuts available, each with its own unique design and features.

These are the most common types of locking wheel nuts.

Spline Drive Wheel Nuts

Spline drive wheel nuts are one of the most popular types of locking wheel nuts. They have a unique pattern on the inside of the nut that matches the pattern on the outside of the wheel stud. This pattern ensures that only the correct key can be used to remove the nut. Spline drive wheel nuts are easy to install and remove, and they provide good security against theft.

Hexagonal Wheel Nuts

Hexagonal wheel nuts are another common type of locking wheel nut. They have a unique shape that makes them more difficult to remove without the correct key. Hexagonal wheel nuts are easy to install and remove, but they are not as secure as spline drive wheel nuts.

Round Wheel Nuts

Round wheel nuts are another type of locking wheel nut that has a unique shape. They are designed to fit tightly onto the wheel stud, which makes them difficult to remove without the correct key. Round wheel nuts are not as popular as other types of locking wheel nuts, but they can provide good security against theft.

Cone Seat Wheel Nuts

Cone seat wheel nuts have a tapered shape that allows them to fit tightly onto the wheel stud. They have a unique key that matches the shape of the nut, which ensures that only the correct key can be used to remove the nut. Cone seat wheel nuts are popular on high-performance vehicles because they provide good security against theft.

Collared Wheel Nuts

Collared wheel nuts are another type of locking wheel nut that has a unique shape. They have a collar on the outside of the nut that provides additional security against theft, these types of locking nut are commonly fitted to BMW`s and Audis.

Lost Locking Wheel Nut Key

As a Mobile Tyre Fitting Service, we get customers enquiring about our locking wheel nut removal service.

Many of these enquiries are from people who purchased their vehicle and unbeknown to them it was never in the vehicle, and they only realised when they needed it and then couldn’t find it.

We had a recent call from a customer who looked everywhere and couldn’t find the key and needed the locking nut to be removed and a new tyre fitted to their Nissan Juke.

We discussed everything with the customer and received all the relevant information, i.e, tyre size and location.

Once we had made contact with the customer we were on site within the hour. We would normally start by looking for the key, but the customer had ensured are us that the vehicle was thoroughly inspected & no key could be located.

For the Nissan Juke the type of locking nut has a flowery pattern on the inside and is known as a hexagonal locking key.

For this type of nut we use a Dynomec tool which has a blade known as a ‘Blade C’. This blade makes a pattern of the inside of the key when its repeatedly hit with a hammer.

After several blows the blade bites deeper, once we feel the blade has got a strong grip we can then start to loosen it with a breaker bar.

And on this occasion our efforts paid off and the locking nut was removed.

We fitted a new tyre (205/60/16) and advised the customer to chase up the dealer where the vehicle was purchased and ask them to provide a replacement key.
